Started in Los Angeles in 2019. Still going.
The Cabbys is Hans Nüsslock and friends and family: a lifelong recording and live-show project built on friendship, family, good songs and getting people moving.
Started in Los Angeles in 2019, The Cabbys have been bringing their blend of surfy guitars, grooving bass lines, catchy alternative rock, psychedelic textures and sunny harmonies to stages throughout Los Angeles and Orange County.
For Hans, The Cabbys is the latest chapter in a musical journey that began more than two decades ago. In 2003 and 2004 he played drums in a reggae project with friends who would later become members of The Growlers. In 2006 he joined The Growlers onstage at a sold-out Wiltern show in Los Angeles, opening for The Bravery, playing bongos in what was both his first major sold-out show and one of The Growlers’ first. He later joined them for several more performances, including a show at Spaceland, on bongos and guitar.
Hans went on to play guitar and sing in a variety of bands, eventually touring to SXSW in Austin in 2011 with The Dog & Pony Act, and playing his first sold-out hometown show at Orange County’s Coach House, opening for Pepper in front of 600 people. Through years of different bands, names, stages and songs, the idea of making music with people close to him never went away.
In 2019, Hans and his cousin Jeanna Fournier, bassist of Little Galaxies (now Dream Phases), started The Cabbys in Los Angeles. Since then the band has released singles and two EPs, with a debut full-length LP scheduled for 2027.
The record
The debut EP, Songs to Get Weird To, was recorded and produced by Sejo Navajas at 4th Street Recording Studio in Santa Monica, a studio known for work with The Neighbourhood, Incubus and No Doubt. It was mixed by Andreas Sandnes and mastered by Grammy Award-winning engineer John Greenham, whose credits include Billie Eilish, Bad Suns and LP.
The sound
Musically, The Cabbys live somewhere between the coast and the strange corners of the imagination. Grooving bass lines and surfy, reverbed-out guitars collide with catchy alt-rock riffs, psychedelic E-Bow melodies and haunting harmonies, creating a sound that can be both dark and light, dreamy and energetic.
On “SHORELINE,” the ocean becomes an escape from the material world: a sonic meditation on driving down the coast after a day in the water, with the moon overhead and nowhere else to be. “Dr. Negative” takes a more playful turn, blending a little country with alternative rock, sunny guy-girl harmonies over a shuffle beat, bubbly bass and cheerful organs, while the lyrics poke fun at a relentlessly pessimistic friend on an otherwise beautiful day in Laguna Beach. The first single, “SUP Girl (Stand Up Paddle Girl),” brought the band’s catchy pop-punk side to the front. It received more than 100 plays on Amazing Radio and a spin from Joe Sumner, who called it “Perfection, 1:45 of just awesomeness.”
At its heart, The Cabbys is about keeping the music going. Friends. Family. Weird songs. Good times. Ocean air. Loud guitars. And a lifelong reason to get onstage.
